Challenging hate across Warwickshire

The law protects everyone against prejudice or hostility that is directed towards them based on their disability, gender identity, nationality, race, religion or sexual orientation.

Hate incidents happen when someone is targeted simply for being who they are, or who someone perceives them to be. Sometimes what starts as name calling can escalate into something worse such as threats, harassment or even physical violence.

So it’s important that if you have seen or been the victim of hate or abuse, no matter how small you might think it is, that it is reported so that we can do something about it.

Hate crime of any kind has absolutely no place in our society. This site is here to help raise awareness of hate crime, offer support and provide an alternative, easy way for you to report incidents that occur in Warwickshire.

Types of hate incident

Hate crimes and incidents can take many different forms. Even if an incident doesn’t cause physical harm or damage, it doesn’t mean that it is not a crime or that the police and local agencies won’t be interested in knowing about it. Reporting any hate incident can help you get the support you need and help us gather a picture of what is going in an area.

Why should you report hate crime?

  1. Helping you - It doesn’t matter if the incident is a criminal offence or not, every incident should be reported. The police can only charge and prosecute someone when the law has been broken, but there are other things that can be done to help you deal with the incident and get support.

  2. Helping others - By reporting something when it happens to you, you are also helping to prevent it from happening to someone else.

  3. Helping the community - It’s also important to bear in mind that some hate crimes start as smaller incidents which may escalate into more serious and frequent attacks. So when you report, you help the police and local organisations take action to combat hate crime before it becomes even more serious.

Hate Crime in Warwickshire

The Warwickshire Hate Crime Partnership is made up of local organisations that have a responsibility for community safety. The Partnership includes representatives from a number of statutory, voluntary and community organisations including Warwickshire County Council, Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Warwickshire Police, Equality & Inclusion Partnership (EQuIP), Nuneaton Borough Council, North Warwickshire Borough Council, Warwick District Council, Stratford District Council, Rugby Borough Council, and Victim Support.

We have recognised that hate crime is under-reported in the county and that improvements are needed to increase confidence in the reporting process and broaden the support on offer to victims.
